Melilotus officinalis 黃香草木樨

Common name: Ribbed Melilot, Common Melilot
Scientific name: Melilotus officinalis 黃香草木樨
Genus: Melilotus 草木樨屬
Family: Fabaceae 豆科, legume, pea or bean family

Origin: Neotype (established after 1500 AD). It is probably a native from C. & S. Europe eastwards to C. Asia. It came to UK as seeds introduced with clover from America, first being recorded in 1835.

Date: 1st July


An erect plant, can reach up to 150 cm. 






Remarks: This species has keel shorter than wings and standard (see above picture) whereas the similar species, Melilotus altissimus, the Tall Melilot 高大草木樨, has petals all more or less the same length. It has a less compact racemes when compared to the rather compact racemes of Melilotus altissimus. It has a 3-5mm, transversely wrinkled, glabrous , brown pod when it is ripe whereas Melilotus altissimus has a black pubescent pod.
