Leaf 8-25 mm whereas the similar Lesser Bulrush, Typha angustifolia 狹葉香蒲, 水燭, 蒲草* has narrower leaves of 3-6 mm wide. (* It is also recorded as an exotic species in HK.)
Inflorescence 18-30 mm, with male part upper more or less contiguous to the lower female part, whereas the similar Lesser Bulrush, Typha angustifolia, has shorter inflorescence of 13-25 mm, with male part and female part separated by 3-8 mm bare stem.
