A perennial that can form dense mat and cushion. Flowering stems erect, unbranched, can reach up to 30 cm.
Flowering stem hairy in ssp. maritima. (vs flowering stem glabrous in ssp. elongata) (Note the hairy stem at the top centre in the above photo.)
Leaves linear, narrow, less than 2 mm wide, with 1 vein.
