Scientific name: Sagittaria sagittifolia 茨菰, 慈姑, 葃菇, 燕尾草, 白地栗
Genus: Sagittaria 茨菰屬
Family: Alismataceae 澤瀉科, water-plantain family
Remarks*: S. trifolia, also called 茨菇 in Cantonese and could be found planted in Hong Kong, is sometimes treated as a synonym of S. sagittifolia. However, S. sagittifolia is different from S. trifolia in having petals with a violet spot at the base and violet anthers.
S. sagittifolia is fully temperate in its range, being found through most of Europe and into west Asia. S. trifolia is the species cultivated for its edible tubers. In Europe it is only found in far eastern Russia, but extends through much of temperate Asia into tropical southeast Asia.
