Heracleum sphondylium 歐獨活, 豬草, 普通豬草, 牛防風, 牛歐洲防風草

Distinctive leaf sheath at the base of the compound leaves.


A leaf sheath that clamps the stem. A undeveloped flowering shoot is found inside it and will protrude on later season.

There are ridges and grooves on the downy stem. There may or may not have purple hue on the stem. (vs no ridges and grooves on the stem with sharp bristles. There are distinctive purple blotches on the stem in Heracleum mantegazzianum 大葉牛防風, 大豕草, giant hogweed.)

There are two kinds of hairs of different tallness.

Leaf simply pinnate. Leaflets are lobed and coarsely toothed. The lower leaflets are stalked. (see the top middle part of the above photo.) (vs the leaves are pinnate to ternate, very deeply divided, angular and pointed in Heracleum mantegazzianum 大葉牛防風, 大豕草, giant hogweed.)

A tall, robust, pubescent biennial, can reach up to 2 m. Flowering shoots appear at the axil of the leaves as well as at the top of the plant.

The flower heads are flat-topped, curved or like a pom-pom. (vs umbrella-shaped or dome-shaped in Heracleum mantegazzianum 大葉牛防風, 大豕草, giant hogweed.)

The flower head (compound umbel 複傘形花序) at the top of the plant. The compound umbel is around 20 cm across. (vs around 50 cm across in Heracleum mantegazzianum 大葉牛防風, 大豕草, giant hogweed.)

There are 8-15 rays (primary rays) of the umbel. (vs more than 50 rays of the umbel in Heracleum mantegazzianum 大葉牛防風, 大豕草, giant hogweed.) 


Bracts are absent (quickly withering?) or few. (absent on the above photo.)

Those inner flowers of the umbellule are more regular (5 petals are equal in length). 5 stamens are yet to unfold.

This flower is more irregular (zygomorphic). (petals are of different length)

 There are 4 oil ducts (dark stripes) appear on the later stage of the fruits.

Allium triquetrum 三棱葱, 三棱莖葱

Common name: Three-cornered Garlic
Scientific name: Allium triquetrum 三棱葱, 三棱莖葱
Genus: Allium 葱屬
Family: Family: Alliaceae 葱科, onion family

Remarks*:

Origin: Neophyte (established after 1500 AD). It is a native of the W. & C. Mediterranean region. It was introduced by 1759 and established by 1849.

Date: 27th May

There are 2-5 leaves for each individual plant.


Stem is sharply 3-angled (could not be seen in the above photo), and is up to 45 cm tall. (vs stem is smooth in Allium oleraceum 菜園葱, field garlic)

Leaves 5-17 mm wide. They are flat and are keeled beneath.

Another plant.

Flowers are dropping, in 3-15 flowered umbel, rather lax and 1-sided, without bulbils. There are originally 2 bracts, but had dropped for the above specimen. (vs flowers absent, or 1-few in umbels with small green bulbils in Allium paradoxum 鈴鐺葱, few-flowered garlic vs 5-40-flowered umbel, with few to many bulbils, or sometimes with bulbils only in Allium oleraceum 菜園葱, field garlic.)

6 tepals, 10-18mm long, white with longitudinal green stripe. Stamens not protruding.


There are 6 stamens originally, 3 of them had their anthers dropped in this flower. 1 style with 3 stigmas.

Viburnum latana 綿毛莢蒾

Common name: Wayfaring-tree
Scientific name: Viburnum latana 綿毛莢蒾
Genus: Viburnum 莢蒾屬*
Family: Adoxaceae 五福花科, moschatel family

Remarks*: Viburnum was previously included in the Caprifoliaceae 忍冬科, the honeysuckle family. Based on molecular phylogeny, it is now placed in Adoxaceae 五福花科, moschatel family.

Origin: native

Date: 26th April & (13th May)

A deciduous shrub, can reach up to 3 m.

Fruit is forming. It is very laterally compressed at this stage.
