Growing alongside the canal, maybe because of the rhizomes linked together.

An erect plant, can reaches up to 15 cm.

Leaves are grass-like, hence it is belonged to Luzula 地楊梅屬.

All leaves are less than 8 mm wide.

Flowers borne in groups of 2 or more

Only stigmas are protruding from the flowers, tepals not yet opened. Maybe the pistils mature first in order to prevent self-pollination - protogyny 雌蕊先熟)

Tepals dark brown; 6 stamens, 1 style; anthers are 3-4 times as long as filaments. (vs anthers are shorter than 2 times as long as filaments in Luzula multiflora 山間地揚梅, 多花地揚梅, 西藏地揚梅, the heath wood-rush and Luzula pallescens 淡花地揚梅, the fen wood-rush)

Inflorescence of 1 sessile and 3-6 (2 in this photo) stalked clusters of 3-12 flowers. All flowers opened in this plant. (enlarged as below)

Stigmas were withering, maybe they are fruiting now.

Luzula pilosa

Common name: Hairy Wood-rush
Scientific name: Luzula pilosa 
Genus:  Luzula 地楊梅屬
Family: Juncaceae 燈心草科, rush family

Remarks: There are two genus in Juncaceae in UK, there differences are as follows:

a/ Juncus 燈心草屬 (rushes): leaves usually cylindrical or channelled; glabrous;

b/ Luzula 地楊梅屬 (wood-rushes): leaves grass-like; hairly at base, at least when young

Date:  25th & 27th March

Several plants are living together; can grow to 30 cm high.

Leaves are grass-like, hence it is belonged to Luzula 地楊梅屬.

Note the leaves are hairy; basal leaves 3-4 mm wide (vs basal leaves 1.5-3 mm wide in Luzula forsteri, the southern wood-rush)
