A tall biennial thistle, can reach up to 2m.



A young plant (probably during the first year of growth) with basal rosette.



Stem is spiny-winged throughout.


Stem leaf is sessile and decurrent.


Leaf is hairy above.


Flowering heads are short-stalked, in clusters at ends of often arching branches.


Flowering head is 1.5 - 2 cm across and is purple (purple petals).


Florets of different stages. 1, anther tube splits open at its tip, with white pollens attached. 2, style is emerging from the anther tube, with the style sticked with the white pollens. The pollens will then be carried by pollinators to other florets. 3, Style is fully emerging from the anther tube.
