Common name: Himalayan Balsam
Scientific name: Impatiens glandulifera 喜馬拉雅鳳仙花, 印第安鳳仙花
Genus: Impatiens 鳳仙花屬
Family: Balsaminaceae 鳳仙花科, balsam family

Origin: Neophyte (established after 1500 AD). It is a native of the Himalayas. It was introduced as an ornamental garden plant in 1839 and was recorded in the wild in 1855.

A very tall plant, can reach up to 2 m.



Leaves opposite or in whorls. Glands on the leaf stalk and the stem.

A newly opened flower. Androecium could be seen now, this is the male stage of the flower.

After the cap, the androecium, had dropped, the gynoecium could now be seen, this is the female stage of the flower. In this way, it prevents self-pollination by protandry.
